Promoting a Safer Church

St Thomas Church

Ensuring that children, young people, and vulnerable adults are kept safe whilst in our care is an integral part of our church life. The care and protection of everyone at St Thomas Church, Kirkby in Ashfield is the responsibility of us all, and we follow the Church of England’s safeguarding policy “Promoting a Safer Church.”

Our commitments

  • Promote a safe environment and culture in every service, group, and event.
  • Safely recruit and support everyone who works with children, young people, or vulnerable adults.
  • Respond promptly to every safeguarding concern or allegation.
  • Care pastorally for victims and survivors of abuse, and for those affected by concerns or allegations.
  • Respond appropriately to anyone who may pose a present risk to others.

As a parish we will

  • Create a safe, caring place for all who come to St Thomas.
  • Appoint a named Parish Safeguarding Officer to work with the Vicar and PCC.
  • Provide training and support so volunteers and staff can recognise and respond to abuse.
  • Ensure suitable insurance covers activities involving children and adults.
  • Display clear contact details in church and on this site for reporting safeguarding concerns.
  • Listen to and take seriously every disclosure of abuse.
  • Notify the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser and statutory agencies immediately when concerns arise.
  • Support victims and survivors of abuse, whenever or wherever it occurred.
  • Monitor and support anyone in the church community who may pose a risk, while maintaining confidentiality and safety.
  • Review safeguarding policies, procedures, and risk assessments at least annually.
